Borgo Brigola

Province of Treviso, VenetoAccess not verified

Borgo Brigola is a locality, uninhabited as of 2014, in the north of the comune of Vittorio Veneto.

Research carried out in winter 2014 by the writer Giovanni Carraro found that in the past there were only a few stables in this area, and old Napoleonic and Austro-Hungarian maps only show the place name Val Calde.

In the mid-nineteenth century a certain Antonio Balbinot, known as Tòna Tonèi Brigola, who lived in Fadalto Basso, bought the land from wealthy local owners (the De Mori and Marson families of Vittorio Veneto) and built the houses that still stand. This gave rise to the name Da Brigola, later simplified to Borgo Brigola. Brigola comes from the dialect word britoła, the small curved knife used by farmers.

The money to build the houses came from breaking open a postal strongbox left behind by a garrison of Austro-Hungarian soldiers along the Strada Regia di Alemagna. The strongbox still exists, well preserved, in the hands of other Balbinot descendants in the town of Oderzo. The discovery was the subject of a TV report by Rai 3 Veneto, presented by Luca Ginetto and broadcast on Saturday 22 March 2014.
