Castellammare della Bruca
Castellammare della Bruca (or Castellamare; Castrimaris in medieval Latin documents) is the name of the fortified village built in the Middle Ages at about 71 m above sea level, on the headland where the acropolis of Velia, the ancient Greek colony of Elea, once stood.
The place is also called Castellamare di Velia, as it lies inside the archaeological area of Elea (Velia in Roman times), within the administrative borders of the comune of Ascea.
