Abandoned village

Coindo

Province of Turin, PiedmontAccess not verified

Coindo (Ou Couindou in Franco-Provençal, Ël Coindo in Piedmontese) is a mountain frazione of the comune of Condove, split into two clusters of houses called Upper and Lower (Couindou damoùn and daveù).

There are no detailed records of the hamlet's founding or origins, but genealogical research shows it was already lived in by the Cordola and Cinato families in the 17th century. Both clusters were completely abandoned after the Second World War: the lower one from 1945 and the upper one from 1964. The houses of the lower village are completely in ruins, and those of the upper village partly so. Access is difficult because there is no road linking it to the main town of Condove in the valley or to the nearby hamlets of Lajetto and Sigliodo. The only way in is the mule track that branches off the one linking Sigliodo to Laietto, at a votive pillar dedicated to the Madonna della Consolata.
