Abandoned village
Rebeccu
Rebeccu is the only frazione of the comune of Bonorva, in the metropolitan city of Sassari, about six kilometres away. It sits halfway up Monte Cuccuru de Pischinas at 408 m, overlooking the Santa Lucia plain.
In the time of the Sardinian judicates Rebeccu was an important centre of the Meilogu. A fief of the Kingdom of Arborea, it first appears in documents from the 1300s as the main town of the curatoria of Costa de Addes (or Costavalle) and the residence of the Curator. With 400 inhabitants it was the largest and most important centre in the area, with the villages of Bonorva, Semestene and Trequiddo under it. In 1353 it was invaded and burned by Rambaldo de Corbera, at war with Mariano IV of Arborea. On 14 January 1388, in the square in front of the church of Santa Maria (today Santa Giulia), the representatives of the curatoria of Costa de Addes gathered to approve the peace treaty between King John I of Aragon and the judge Eleonora of Arborea (Ultima Pax Sardiniae, signed in Cagliari on 24 January 1388).
From the 1400s, probably because of plague and famine, Rebeccu began to decline: a census of 1485 shows between 280 and 350 inhabitants and 70 households, down to 228 and 57 households in 1589. In the 1600s there were 27 families (39 men and 41 women); a hundred and fifty inhabitants at the end of the 1800s, six families in the 1950s, and only one resident since January 2007.
Rebeccu became a frazione of Bonorva on 31 December 1875.
