Antuni

Province of Rieti, LazioAccess not verified

Monte Antuni, also known simply as Antuni, is an uninhabited frazione of the comune of Castel di Tora (RI), in Lazio.

According to some historians, the territory of Antuni was once located near the ancient town of Thora, in the Roman municipium of the Res publica Aequiculanorum, which controlled the wide area between the Cicolano and the upper Aniene valley. The medieval settlement was probably founded around the beginning of the 11th century. The first mention of the Castrum Antoni dates to 1092, when historical and church documents record the donation of some estates of the Lombard Guidoneschi family to the Abbey of Farfa. Between the 16th and 18th centuries the fief passed through many families, such as the noble Brancaleoni, who in the 1500s owned parts of the central Apennines, the Cesarini, the Mattei, the Lante della Rovere and the Gentili, with the marquis Filippo lord of Antuni in 1720. Margherita Sparapani gave up the property in 1816, and soon after it passed to the noble Del Drago family of Viterbo. Raised to a principality by Pope Gregory XVI on 19 June 1832, it was held by a series of princes: Urbano, first prince of Mazzano and Antuni, Filippo Massimiliano, Alfonso, Giovanni Francesco and Clemente. In modern times two events shaped the history of the village. The first came in 1939, when the Posticciola dam created the artificial Lake Turano, which almost completely surrounds Mount Antuni; the bridge was designed in the 1920s and built between 1936 and 1939.
