Borgo Guttadauro
Borgo Guttadauro is a frazione of the Italian comune of Butera, in the free municipal consortium of Caltanissetta, Sicily.
Built in 1940, the hamlet was one of the rural settlements of the Fascist period, established under King Victor Emmanuel III of Savoy. After a troubled history, it was officially assigned to the comune of Butera on 14 January 1971, and was then abandoned for good in the mid-1980s.
Borgo Guttadauro was part of the land-reclamation project of the Gela Plain consortium, which planned eight rural settlements to start the agricultural development of the area. The hamlet was built in the Case Cammarata area, on land owned by the brothers Francesco and Fulvio Camerata, sons of Baron Salvatore Camerata of Piazza Armerina, who had obtained it on 12 January 1913 through a merger of usufruct after the death of Girolama Suberras.
The project for Borgo Guttadauro (drawn up on 6 May 1940), entrusted to the architect Gaetano Averna, was approved on 20 June 1940. It planned a large settlement including, among other things, an 84 m² Greek-cross church seating 180 people, a parish house, a school (with teacher's lodging), a town-hall building, a post office, a carabinieri station, a doctor's surgery, a trattoria with rooms, the offices of the Agency for the Colonisation of the Sicilian Latifundium, shops and an electrical substation.
