Abandoned village
Borgo Baccarato
Borgo Baccarato is the only frazione of Aidone, in the free municipal consortium of Enna.
Built around 1940, it was one of the new rural villages promoted by Mussolini during the Fascist period to settle mainly farmers in new areas closer to their fields. Borgo Baccarato, however, housed miners and their families: right there was the Baccarato sulphur mine, which closed in the 1970s.
The village also grew for a while as a farming centre, but emigration after the mine closed led to its complete abandonment.
