Abandoned village
Chiapporato
Chiapporato is a small uninhabited village in the comune of Camugnano, in the province of Bologna, closed to motor vehicles. Dating from the 1500s, it was long home to charcoal burners, shepherds and woodcutters.
The setting is rugged and most of the village is in ruins: an old washhouse, the oven, the letterbox and traces of old plaques on the ruined houses still survive. The church of San Giovanni Battista, above the village, was restored in 2005, raising hopes of further restoration. Electricity, missing until then, has finally reached the village too. The small adjacent cemetery from 1847 is striking. Both the rectory and the church belong to and are managed by the Curia of Bologna, while the cemetery is managed by the Comune of Camugnano.
400 m south of Chiapporato lies Chiapporato di Là (decimal coordinates 44.092346° N, 11.068231° E), a cluster of a few houses, all also uninhabited. It can be reached from Chiapporato in a few minutes' walk along CAI trail 21/A.
