Abandoned village
Valle Pezzata
Valle Pezzata is an uninhabited frazione of the comune of Valle Castellana in the province of Teramo, Abruzzo.
Since the Middle Ages Valle Pezzata, like other villages in the upper Castellano valley, has depended on the Diocese of Ascoli.
Its church is dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Bari and belongs to the parish of the Santissima Annunziata of Valle Castellana.
The village's little church, the only one, is small and rectangular; its apse was recently removed.
Under the lintels of the doors there are owl heads carved as brackets; the side door bears a relief of a rampant lion with the date 1519.
The small travertine altar and the statue of Saint Vincent (made by craftsmen from Val Gardena) are recent (1954).
The bell measures 37.5 × 41 cm and bears this hard-to-read inscription in late Gothic letters: AVE M LM CISTER 0 A R L V D T M 0 MCCCCQIIII.
The bell seems to come from the destroyed convent of San Francesco al Cavallaro.
