Abandoned village

Serra

Province of Teramo, AbruzzoAccess not verified

Serra is a frazione of the comune of Rocca Santa Maria, in the province of Teramo.

The village stands at 1,096 metres in the Monti della Laga, inside the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park.

The name Serra may come from the local dialect word sèrrə, meaning ridge: the village is built on a ridge above the ditch where the Vezzola stream rises.

The village belonged to the old University of Rocca Bisegna, together with the hamlets and lands of Faiete-Cona Faiete, San Biagio, Pomarolo and Macchia Santa Cecilia.

Luigi Ercole, in his Dictionary printed in 1804 (p. 108), tells us that Serra had 38 inhabitants at the time.

By 1841 they had risen to 44. Today only one person lives in the village.

In summer some people return to their birthplace for a holiday.

There are plans to restore the village as an albergo diffuso (scattered hotel), linked with the villages of Martese and Valle Pezzata.

The village stretches lengthwise, with houses lining its only street.
