Abandoned village
Bariano (Merlino)
Bariano, sometimes recorded as Basiano, was an ancient settlement in the Lodi area, north of Merlino, once the seat of a pieve (parish district) of the diocese of Lodi.
Little is known about this old village.
A document from 1261, however, records a parish church dedicated to Sant'Eufemia, the seat of a pieve of the diocese of Lodi. The churches of Cazzano, Vaiano, Comazzo, San Martino Bianco, Lavagna, San Martino Nero, San Quirico (?), Merlino, Santissima Trinità (?), Santa Maria in Pratello (?), Santa Maria Auroni, San Giovanni al Calandrone and San Martino Rosso depended on it.
In 1574 bishop Antonio Scarampo visited the church and found it in ruins and long out of use. He ordered it to be demolished and the title of pieve to be moved to the church of Merlino. The village itself was probably already abandoned by then.
Even in the early twentieth century some fields still carried the name of the vanished village.
