Abandoned village

Cazzano (Merlino)

Province of Lodi, LombardyAccess not verified

Cazzano was an ancient settlement in the Lodi area, abandoned because it was exposed to the floods of the Adda. It stood south-east of Marzano, in today's municipal territory of Merlino.

The information about this old village is scarce and fragmentary; it is mentioned in some documents from the 12th century onwards.

What is certain is that it had a parish church dedicated to the Assumption, part of the pieve of Bariano in the diocese of Lodi. Later the church was recorded as a rectory, and in 1515 Pope Leo X gave it in commendam to his private chamberlain, Count Alessandro Leccami.

The village was struck several times by the disastrous floods of the Adda and half destroyed; by the end of the 1500s only two houses were left standing, so the parish was abolished and joined to that of Marzano. The comune of Cazzano, by then little more than the administration of farmland, nonetheless survived until 1757.
