Abandoned village
Botto (Senna Lodigiana)
Botto was a frazione of the comune of Senna Lodigiana on the banks of the river Po, now abandoned.
Botto originally stood on the right bank of the Po, as part of the comune of Calendasco, and so belonged administratively to the province of Piacenza. Between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance the devastating, uncontrolled floods of the Po spared the village but pushed the river's course further south, and Botto found itself on the left bank. Property rights did not change, though, and the village remained under the Duchy of Parma. In 1798 Napoleon, who had conquered the whole area, used the clauses of the 1796 Parma surrender treaty to redraw the borders, and Botto passed to the department of the Adda. In that turbulent revolutionary period the hamlet had to wait eleven years for a new administrative home, which naturally became Senna Lodigiana. When the Austrians arrived in 1814 and added the new territory to their land register, they listed it as a census municipality under the name "Botto ex Piacentino".
